about

A year on from Soft-Bodied Humans’ critically-acclaimed debut, Kaiju Kitala, which saw the London-based producer teamed against supreme Ugandan MC Swordman Kitala, he is back with a banging new multi-vocalist EP, Kaijugrime.

First single Detragon (Big People Business) is a ferocious team-up with next-generation grime prince sbk. Over Soft-Bodied Humans’ idiosyncratic Japanese monster-movie-derived beats, sbk unloads with a passionate autobiographical flow.

In a world where monsters are very much real - and more often structural and socioeconomic than rubber-suited - sbk’s narrative of a prodigious young MC making it out of a world of council flats and “living off tat” has a triumphant, near-superhuman edge.

Second single Foksaurus beams in Japanese rapper MCpero for a disarmingly sweet pop song, with the brutalist production reconfiguring into charming major-key melodies and assembling protectively around pero’s wistful singing.

The EP is completed by a new version of Soft-Bodied Humans’ Mantis Man collaboration with art-pop auteur Silver Pyre. Over eardrum-kicking grime-adjacent beats, Silver Pyre delivers a snarling Lydon/MES vocal that is abstract, aggressive and exhilarating.

Praise for sbk

“SBK is one of the brightest new MCs in the country, someone taking that classic grime sound in a fresh direction.” - Clash

“Co-signs from the likes of Novelist, Manga Saint Hilare and Jammz underline the trust the grime scene has placed in young SBK.” – Resident Advisor

“SBK has taken the grime scene by storm with his charismatic persona; one which bleeds throughout his music. From an abundance of memorable bars and unique flows, SBK continues to demonstrate his versatility as an artist, stylistically showcasing his knack for spitting and creating hits.” – Grime Originals

“It’s fair to say that SBK is setting levels and that the future of Grime is in good hands.” – Lockthelock

Praise for Soft-Bodied Humans

“Samples of Japanese monster films and unmatchable lyrical prowess accompany infectiously energetic instrumentals.” – The Wire

“Fuck-the-club up mid-00s grime riffs and late-00s dubstep kickdrums that gobble up all the
air in the room” – The Quietus

“Just like the kaiju that inspired them, these beats clang and scrape when they don’t rock the earth beneath their feet, blazing like towering infernos at the mercy of the gigantic beasts whose presence is clear in the snippets of newsreel that occasionally force their way through the maelstrom.” – Underscore Magazine

“Wonky, acerbic, bass-heavy hip-hop” – Pan African Music

“A gnarly volley of industrial grime rap infused with Japanese monster movie samples” – Boomkat
